Our Founding Story

The Organization I Needed Before I Knew How to Ask for Help

Scars of Resilience was founded from a simple but powerful realization: no woman or girl should have to carry her pain alone.

For many years, I encountered experiences and life challenges that left emotional scars I did not fully understand. Like many women, I learned how to keep moving forward, how to appear strong, and how to carry difficult experiences quietly. Yet beneath that strength were questions, pain and emotions that often had no safe place to go.

What I remember most is not only the adversity itself, but the loneliness that came with it. There were moments when I wished there was someone to listen without judgment, someone who understood, and a safe space where healing was just as important as survival.

As I later pursued studies and professional work in Gender and Development, I began to see that what many women and girls experience is often hidden beneath the surface. Behind successful careers, strong families and everyday routines are stories of violence, loss, rejection, discrimination, separation, single parenthood, emotional distress and silent struggles that rarely find a voice.

Again and again, I met women who were carrying invisible burdens. Some were recovering from gender-based violence. Others were navigating difficult life transitions, grief, family conflict or emotional trauma. Many had learned to survive, but few had been given the opportunity to heal.

These experiences transformed the way I viewed empowerment.

I came to understand that while economic empowerment, education and leadership are important, true empowerment also requires healing. It requires safe spaces, supportive relationships, emotional wellbeing and the opportunity to rebuild one’s sense of self after adversity.

Scars of Resilience was created to be that space.

Our organization exists to walk alongside women, adolescent girls and young people as they navigate life’s challenges. Through survivor-centered and trauma-informed approaches, we create opportunities for healing, resilience-building, mentorship and personal growth.

The name Scars of Resilience reflects our belief that scars are not symbols of weakness. They are evidence of survival. They tell stories of courage, perseverance and hope. They remind us that healing is possible and that our experiences do not define our future.

Today, every woman who finds support through a peer circle, every girl who discovers her voice through mentorship, and every survivor who realizes she is not alone reminds us why this work matters.

Our vision is a future where women and girls are not merely surviving adversity but thriving beyond it—equipped with the resilience, support and opportunities needed to live with dignity, purpose and hope.

Thank you for joining us on this journey of healing, resilience and transformation.
